DENIS AVEY'S STORY PRE-EMPTED BY HODDER

Denis Avey is a WW2 survivor known as 'the man who broke into Auschwitz'. He was a prisoner of war interned next to the camp and exchanged places over several nights with a Jewish inmate - this and other exploits have earned him the 'Heroes of the Holocaust' medal which was presented to him at 10 Downing Street last week. Rob Broomby, the BBC journalist who discovered Denis' story and has become a close friend, will write the book. Rupert Lancaster of Hodder had contacted Rob the day Denis was intervieweed on Radio 4. That morning I happened to be in the Hodder office and told Rupert I was the agent. 24 hours later we had a deal. Denis' war reminds me of Andy McNab's novels it was so full of action and impossible escapes from death and at 91 he is still in fighting form. I would be amazed if this story didn't end up on the screen.
